Biography

A longterm proponent of all things percussive, Sam Debell has been active in China for over 10 years, playing with bands and collaborating with producers from all over the country. The name Renmin Rhythm originally described a percussion collective based in Yunnan, Southern China but has expanded through the years to encompass a spectrum of musical endeavors’ in styles ranging from Jazz, Funk, Rock and latin to Yunnan ethnic folk music and even instrument production. The only common thread linking all these is a fusing style steeped in Afro-based rhythms and instruments, with the driving drum beats and percussive licks on which Debell's reputation has rightly come to be based.   Debell resides in Beijing where he is member of bands such as The Verse,  Afrokoko Roots, Shanren as well as a respected percussion teacher and performer.  He is also a musical consultant for various festivals and media projects such as the pioneering China Rock Chart and is a central member of Funk*Fever, promoting Funk music in the capital.
